Six for Sunday

So today I thought I would start a new series called “Six for Sunday”. I know a few people in the retro blogosphere have a “Five for Friday”, so I wanted to do something like that, but with my own little twist. Yes, I know, just adding one more thing to the list isn’t really adding a twist, but bear with me, mmkay?

1. The Notebook

20120325-180320.jpg

Oh my my my, how I love this movie! It is on ABC Family today, and as soon as I saw the first picture of when they are rolling the beginning credits I knew it was it! How could I not watch? I absolutely adore the fashions that they used in the film, and lust after every dress, every shoe, and every hat. Granted, the hair is not entirely accurate, but I digress. And the movie is the epitome of romantic. I am not much of a mushy person (I was in the military, after all LOL), but I adore this movie. I never cried at this movie (I have never cried at any movie in my life), but my heart did break a little bit, ya know?

2. Mad Men is back, baby!

20120325-180852.jpg

OMG, I can not wait for this show to come back. It is T minus 3 hours until all of the fun begins, and I am getting antsy. I just recently got into Mad Men, watching it on Netflix after my surgery starting at my Mom’s house and all the way into early February. I even got my boyfriend into it also! He was kind of moping about my having it on and he would study while I watched, but then he started watching it too, and got into it just as much as I am! LOL. I am sure the new season will be amazing, and I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us. I haven’t become this obsessed with a show in a long time. That and the inclusion of Jon Hamm doesn’t hurt, either 😉

3. Booby Trap Sweatshirt

20120325-181636.jpg

How much do I want this sweatshirt? I don’t think you know LOL. Cardigans are nice for going out and things, but I like sweatshirts for lounging around, and this is the perfect rockabilly and burlesque look that I want, along with the comfort factour. I am mostly vintage, but sometimes rockabilly too, so I like to have some flavours into my wardrobe. I plan on expending the $60 on this sweatshirt soon, hopefully with my tax refund, baby! 🙂

4. Pimps & Pinups Salon

20120325-182854.jpg

Yes, that is an actual photo of the actual place I get my hair cut at. It is everything I consider my style, and me – sexy, vampy, bombshell, and elegant. It definitely fits a 1950s Hollywood dressing room type of look. It is all black except for the sign, and it makes it look amazing. I really need to go at night one time, I have to see it in all of its awesomeness 🙂 And my hairstylist, Marissa? AH-MAY-ZING! I have been going here (and to her) for months, and I can’t imagine going anywhere else. I thought I found an amazing place to get my hair cut near my apartment in Queens, but wow was I wrong when I went to this place! Marissa has always been my go-to girl; this time I am rocking a bit of a shorter style, with Bettie bangs. I asked her what she thought of me with them, since I was not 100% sold on them, and she said, “Let’s go”. And OMG, they look incredible – she was spot on. Even she was like, “This is what you have been missing!” And Marissa is very meticulous as well – not only does she cut after the initial shampoo, but she spends extra time after she blow dries and styles to perfect the cut afterwards. I never had that before! She seriously spent an extra 15 minutes just making sure my Bettie bangs were perfect 🙂 And they serve you wine, beer, coffee, or tea while you get your cut – can it get any more awesome than that? I think not 🙂

Here is a crappy pic of my cut that was taken by my boyfriend on Hipstamatic. It’s a little too blurry and weird to see the cut too well, but you get the idea 😉

5. This Picture

20120325-190409.jpg

I look at this and every time I laugh. It’s too stupid and too funny not to 🙂

6. Sleep

I have certainly not been getting enough lately, and it has been dragging me down. I am very sensitive to noise, and when I am trying to fall asleep, if I hear even a little tick, I will snap up and it will bother me. I also have noisy upstairs neighbors that sound like they are dinosaurs, and are very inconsiderate. They will stomp around from 7 or 8 in the morning until about midnight or so. Just ridiculous. And then then there are noises over at my boyfriend’s house as well which don’t help me getting any rest, either. I even wear earplugs, and that barely helps. Plus the pain from my shoulder and my foot is absurd and also prevents me from sleeping. I don’t know what to do! All I know is that I need some good sleep, ASAP. Does anyone have any good sleep tips you would like to share for posterity? 🙂

Finding Your Own Vintage Style

20120322-130420.jpg

Hi there dolls – now that we have gotten the past few posts of my photo shoot work out of the way, I am sure a lot of you would like to go back to our regularly scheduled programming. Well, you are in luck!

I have been inspired lately by a lot of fellow vintage and rockabilly bloggers in my style and my dress. I know when I started out on the vintage scene, I didn’t really know what to put with what, how to do my hair, the vintage makeup basics, what constitutes vintage inspired versus retro reproduction, and what type of style I was aiming for. I have always prided myself on being different and being unique, and making my style distinctly my own. Now I can provide tips on how you too can find your own distinctive style!

1. Decide what specific type of style you like and identify with – rockabilly, vintage, retro inspired, et cetera. That will be your base. Enter those terms into Google and you will find sites and images that match your particular style you like.

2. Choose what decade you prefer. I personally tend towards the ’40s more, but with some ’30s and ’50s as well. I would also suggest doing research on what constitutes the particular style of that decade, from clothing to hair to makeup and beyond. Make notes if you have to – I know I did when I started out, especially with the hair. After a while, you will begin to be able to distinguish what makes something from what particular decade.

3. Read as many vintage/retro/rockabilly blogs as you can. Those will probably be the best clues and helpers in you figuring out your own style. Note what you like, what colours appeal to you, and so on. Try to see if the blogger posted where they found each particular item, and research from there.

4. Know what works for you. Don’t think Bettie bangs would look good on you? Don’t think flapper dresses are your deal? Don’t do it. Know what you like and also what works for you. Us curvy ladies tend to look best in the styles of the ’40s and ’50s, while more thin and boy shaped figures look better in ’20s drop waist, early ’30s, and ’60s mod-style looks. See pictures of what looks good to you, and note the shape of the woman wearing that particular item that makes it look so great. Maybe they have bigger breasts, more rounded hips, a smaller waist, longer legs, whatever. Some people look better in certain styles than others. If you make note of this now, when you do buy yourself some clothes, you will already know what looks good on you, so you will be a sexy vixen all of the time!

5. Measure thine self! I cannot stress this enough. Especially if you are buying vintage clothes, you need to know what your measurements are, and to make sure you will fit in whatever the garment is. That means being a little bit smaller than what the measurements of the item is, or wearing undergarments that help to pull you in and make you a bit smaller. But know your measurements by heart, and even bring a measuring tape with you when you go shopping at thrift and vintage stores, as some may not have dressing rooms. That way, you know what you are buying and won’t have any disappointments when you get home!

6. Stay true to who you are. Don’t think that just because something is vintage or rockabilly that it is “mandatory wear”. You can’t pull it off if you don’t like it to begin with! Pulling off any look is all about confidence, baby. Don’t think leopard print is for you? Don’t wear it! Looking self-conscious or uncomfortable is not sexy, dahling! Know who you are and own it baby!

The “Me” Sessions (Jodie King Photography) – Street Scenes

Here is the last batch of pictures from my photo shoot with Jodie King Photography. These happen to be my personal favourites of the entire shoot, with the mix of the city street background, the afternoon sun, and the vintage styling. I am usually very critical of pictures that are taken of me, but all of the pictures here I love. It was a fabulous shoot all around!

The “Me” Sessions (Jodie King Photography) – Balcony

Today is part two of my series of shots from my photo shoot with Jodie King Photography. We decided to take it outside, this time on the balcony, and got some great shots as a result of this mixed with the afternoon sun.

The last part of the series will be tomorrow – check back!

The “Me” Sessions (Jodie King Photography) – White Background

Well dolls, I finally did it – I had my very own photo shoot with Jodie King Photography! I just couldn’t resist when the suggestion was made to me to model myself, and I did all of my own makeup, hair, styling, and of course – modelling!

There are three looks/styles in this series, and I will begin with my white background poses of my photos. Stay tuned over the next couple of days for the rest in my series – I assure you, they only get more impressive as time goes on!

Preparing for Viva

20120301-233103.jpg

Well everyone, the final countdown has begun until Viva Las Vegas 15 begins in exactly one month! I am very excited to be making this journey to the “promised land” for all of us vintage and rockabilly people. I am really looking forward to meeting new people, networking, making new friends, and just having an amazing time. And of course, I plan on taking tons of pictures, and I also am planning on updating all of you on the whole scene straight from Viva!

I will be leaving on the 5th of April and returning on the 10th. I have already printed out the schedule of events from their website, and have highlighted all of the things I am interested in attending and plan on doing. I am planning on going to the burlesque showcase, vegas bowling, jive dancing class, burlesque bingo, Viva fashion show, tiki pool party, car show, vendor area, as well as seeing live acts such as the amazing J.D. McPherson. I don’t know if I will even have time to eat because I have so many things I want to do!

I am in the process of deciding what I am going to be wearing during my time in Vegas. Naturally, vintage and/or rockabilly clothing is on the menu, but I don’t want to be wearing the same thing every other girl is wearing. I need to choose my outfits rather carefully! And of course, my hot rollers, pillow rollers, and bobby pins will all be travelling with me – you can’t go to Viva and NOT be done up to the nines! I plan on being done up to the tens 😉 I will be spending extra time making sure my makeup and hair is superb and not off in the least. Even if it takes me over two hours to get ready, so be it! LOL.

I will also be rooting for my friend Kitty Kin-Evil at the Pinup of the Month contest sponsored by The Pinup magazine. I am so excited that she has this great opportunity – get some, girl!

Are any of you all going to Viva? Maybe we will run into each other if you are! What are you most excited for me to report about from VLV 15?

Photoshoot w/ Scarlett Keane (Jodie King Photography) – Behind the Scenes

Here is the last part of my five part series of air and makeup work I did with Jodie King Photography and model Scarlett Keane. These are all behind the scenes shots of me doing my magic. I am very particular and very much a perfectionist!

If you would like to book me to do hair and/or makeup for an upcoming event or other reason, please send me a message at holly (at) veronicavintage.com. I will get back to you within 24 hours.
