Fashion Femmes: Dita Von Teese

Dita Von Teese was born Heather Renée Sweet on 28 September, 1972 in Michigan. She is known as “The Queen of Burlesque” and was also known for being married to Marilyn Manson from 2005 to 2007. Her style is quintessentially that of a glamorous forties screen siren. I will outline her style to help you achieve her fabulous look.

Dita initially had beach blonde hair that she was born with, but dyed her hair a raven colour to give her more mystery, sultriness, and sex appeal. Having dark hair helps, but it is by no means a requirement. As long as you style your hair with rollers in a retro wave, you will be golden 🙂 For her makeup look, you need perfect matte skin, black liquid liner in a cat’s eye shape, and a fabulous red lipstick. Add some rouge and define your eyebrows, possibly adding a beauty mark, and you are set!

Now, let’s look at some of Dita’s outfits and outline her general style:

As you can see, Dita’s style is quintessentially forties, with a tad of the fifties. Look for anything that gives you an hourglass shape. The more fitted the better. I know some ladies may think wearing a big baggy shirt or jeans will “cover up any issues’, but it only just makes you look so much bigger and bulkier than you really are. Also, wearing a size of so too small makes you look chunky as well; dress for your real size, and you’ll look so fabulous people will be double checking you! I can’t over emphasize the importance of a tailor for this look – you literally want everything to hug those curves! Also, foundation garments such as waist clinchers are a great way to start off on the right foot.

Pencil skirts are a must have for this look. Think vintage sexpot, and you will know what to look for. Also, notice how she really only has one focal point of her outfit, and nothing that competes for the attention of your eyes. This is an important thing to remember, as even the sultriest of sexpots during that time never went too over the top. There is sexiness in being understated! I remember reading in a magazine that you look “sexiest” showing only 25% of your skin – this is definitely a good rule to live by.

One of the things I love most about Dita’s style is that even with the most mundane of tasks like grocery shopping she still tries to look pulled together (and she does it damn well!). You don’t have to go all out, but at least make an effort – no one likes to see others shopping in their pajamas like they just rolled out of bed ten minutes prior. She isn’t wearing much makeup except for some mascara and red lipstick – a great five minute routine, if that. She has a tendency to wear cardigans and capris for a more down time look, so be on the hunt for your basic capris and some cardigans with vintage elements. She most likely is wearing heels, but I would say if you can’t wear heels every time you go out of the house you should invest in a good basic pair of black flats.

Dita’s style is so sexy yet very subdued compared to most of Hollywood’s elite. You can’t go wrong dressing in this look!
