VIVA! Part One

Hi dolls! I apologize for the lack of posting recently, but my health has been at the forefront or things and I am now slated to have another shoulder surgery this Friday – this time on the opposite shoulder. I have a torn labrum and a fracture of the humeral head (the part of your upper arm bone that goes into your shoulder). So, I am going in for my sixth time getting cut open. Hence the radio silence! But I wanted to make a few posts whilst I still had both my arms and hands available to do so ๐Ÿ˜‰

Although it has been several months, I have quite a stockpile of great photos and videos from Viva that I am sure no one will mind seeing or re-visiting if you had the wonderful opportunity to attend. This was the last Viva held on Easter weekend – hereafter, Viva will be held near Easter weekend, but not directly during it. I am sure that means numbers of those attending will skyrocket!

One of my first stops was the Charles Phoenix show. Ever since I randomly decided to attend his show last year, I loved it and had to go back. It’s always pretty packed in the showroom because many others think so too! He was his usual zany self, in his crazy wardrobe, with his awesome shots.

Check out a little video I took below of his show:

Next up was the Burlesque Showcase, one of my favorites to attend at Viva.

First was Audrey Deluxe, the organizer of all of the burlesque events at Viva. She always has such cute routines!

Tara MiSioux was next up, and she is one of my favorites. She always has classy, vintage-styled routines set to jazz-y music.

Kitten & Lou were next, and they had such a cute and kitschy routine!

One of my absolute favorites, Roxi D’Lite, was up next. She has such amazing dancing and acrobatic skills, and she is gorgeous!

The fabulous Ms. Perle Noire followed Roxi. She is known for her energy and spunk and did not disappoint in that!

One of the last acts was one that I had anticipated the most, as I am an avid follower of Lou Lou D’Vil on Instagram and Facebook and I think she is super talented (not to mention beyond beautiful!). She is from Finland and her acts are always fierce and on point!

Warning: NSFW Content (pastie falls off)

“But what did you wear?!” You ask? Well…

During the day I wore an amazingly detailed vintage Mexican-style dress from the 1950s, complete with beautiful embroidery and gorgeous lace inlays. Very light and flowy! At night I wore the Tatyana Gold Digger dress, one of my favourite “night out” dresses for sure. Just look at it – it screams “vintage glam”!
Stay tuned for the next Viva post, along with my excursion to California for some Old Hollywood quality time!

The Watch TCM App

l7zor1-pOBusSCAesfFXKF_z2zWofPcshOrnTh1cE-RfoCoDb9DNUG7mrWIuCSQbwElB=w300

Recently, in my household we have had a change in cable providers. I was excited, because that meant I could finally actually get to use the Watch TCM app on my phone! I have had it downloaded for months but never got around to using it because of forgetting what the username and password was for our old provider.

I was able to check it out before, but without watching. It has a whole list of showtimes, who stars in each movie, as well as trivia and images. It also includes blogs and the Shop TCM store for when you just gotta have that movie! The app layout is very nice, and works very well. I have yet to have it crash or freeze on me, which is always a plus!

Absolutely the best feature of this app is that you can watch On Demand movies (I note that only movies that have been recently shown are On Demand), and you can also watch live, from anywhere. That means when you are waiting that hour in the doctor’s office or for that late train, you can watch the beloved TCM! I love that. I know I will be utilizing this on my LIRR train rides to the city to keep me occupied for 40-ish minutes.

The resolution is fab, and the audio works great. I love being able to watch whenever the mood hits me, especially when the husband has a day off and he is playing his video games and I have no TV access. That’s what I wanted it for in the first place! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Here’s a visual peek into what the app offers:

All in all, I would definitely recommend this app to anyone who loves TCM or old movie buffs. Go check it out in your App Store or click the image below to be taken to TCM’s website!

The Joy of “Masters of Sex”

Recently my husband and I discovered the on demand section of FiOs. And my my my, were we happy! I managed to find the Showtime section, and found “Masters of Sex”, a show based in the late 1950s about Virginia Johnson and William Masters, pioneers in the science of sex when even talking about it was considered “smut”, let alone watching people in the act!

Showtime%20Masters%20of%20Sex

So far, I have made it through approximately eight episodes – it is fantastic! I think it is the new Mad Men for me. I can’t wait to get home from work and put on the next episode. I love how they weave everyone’s personal lives into the study, particularly that of Masters & Johnson. How their relationship goes through ups and downs at any moment. I won’t spoil it for anyone who has not seen it yet. If you have yet to watch – what are you waiting for?!

The infamous "Ulysses"

The infamous “Ulysses”

Masters and Johnson helped to pioneer research into human sexual response and the identification and diagnosis of disorders in this area. The initial phase of their study lasted from 1957 until 1965, with direct study of 382 women and 312 men. Their findings debunked numerous myths of the era, such as women being unable to orgasm as not just being “frigid”, lubrication was vaginal, not from the cervix, and clitoral and vaginal orgasms were identical and therefore women were capable of multiple orgasms.

This study took place through Washington University in St. Louis, and initially used prostitutes as the subjects. Prostitutes were thought to be isolated, outcast, and were more willing to participate and were good because of their expertise in sex. This however proved problematic due to the numerous cases of STDs they had found, and soon they were recruiting numerous outside couples. Most were married, upper class, white couples. Some were single and arbitrarily “paired” with someone as well.

They wrote two texts from their studies: Human Sexual Response (1966) and Human Sexual Inadequacy (1970). The described sex in the following four phases:

-Excitement phase (initial arousal)
-Plateau phase (full arousal, not yet at orgasm)
-Orgasm
-Resolution phase (after orgasm)

They also discovered that men undergo a refractory period where they are unable to orgasm for a period of time, while women do not experience this; as a result, they are able to achieve multiple orgasms.

Pretty interesting stuff, huh?! The show makes no qualms about delving deep into these findings and showing/going through how they got there. As some of you may know, Masters & Johnson even become study participants themselves!

I highly suggest this show to anyone who is interested in this field, science, sexuality, and of course vintage lovers! The dรฉcor and style of this show is to die for – I keep telling my husband “I want that! I want that too! OMG I need those!” ๐Ÿ˜‰

I bought the book a few months back at Penn Station when I was still working in Manhattan, and have yet to read it. I am going to have to right that ship starting this weekend and let you all know how it is!

There's a book? Yes!

My MAC and Sephora Makeup Haul

This past weekend I was itching for a retail fix, so the hubby and I hit up the mall at Roosevelt Field to scratch it. I am normally not a mall person, because I can never find clothes in my style anywhere. Only online and vintage shops for this girl! But there are two places I can never shy away from: MAC and Sephora ๐Ÿ™‚

20140303-212847.jpg

I saw this on Sephora’s website, and when I saw this I just had to have it! I am on a super skin kick lately, especially with the dryness of winter really getting to my skin as of late, and I have been on a BOLO for some good TLC for my skin. I didn’t want to dive in head first with something that I wasn’t sure about it working with my skin. I am not willing to be cheap on my skin care, either. So, what’s a girl to do? Sephora must have known my plight and created this kit just for me! I tried the Kate Somerville exfoliator so far, and I love it! I can’t wait to see what the other products do for me.

20140303-213936.jpg

Anyone who knows me personally knows how much of a stickler I am for a stippler. That would be a stippling brush to apply foundation ๐Ÿ˜‰ Have you ever wanted to not worry so much about having a super exact match in foundation as well as being able to achieve a flawless, airbrushed finish? Well honey, run out NOW and grab yourself a stippling brush! Your foundation will also last you way longer because you are using way less but still achieving the same look! I have had the same stippling brush for nearly two years, so I know I was way overdue for a new one. Sephora has great brushes so it was a worthwhile investment.

I also nabbed myself an Urban Decay Eye Primer Potion, which I have heard nothing but rave reviews about. I’ve been wanting to try it for a long time. I have been using Too Faced’s Shadow Insurance, which hasn’t been bad for me, but I’m sure there is better out there. We shall see what UD can do!

And this last Sephora buy – I can’t believe I nabbed this. I’m in awe and so happy I was able to grab it. It’s Anastasia Beverly Hills’ DipBrow Pomade! I have heard nothing but crazy amazing testimonials about how amazing this stuff is. I can NOT wait to try it! If you would like to see how it looks after I try it for the first time, along with my other looks and life musings, follow me on Instagram at “RockSteadyUSMC”.

20140303-220051.jpg

Now on to MAC! I have been buying more and more of their products, and am even starting to consider applying to MAC as an artist. I have a few friends who are MAC MUAs, and I love the work they do – I would love to be a part of the elite! ๐Ÿ™‚ Certainly more fun and I could be as crazy looking as I like – lavender hair, tattoos, pinup clothes and all! ๐Ÿ™‚

I recently bought two shades or their Studio Sculpt foundation – one for contouring, the other as my all over foundation. I love it! So when I ran out of my undereye concealer, MAC was the natural way to go ๐Ÿ˜‰ The girl there (with awesome bright pink hair, BTW) helped me pick my shade (NW 20) and it is fabulous! I also picked up Viva Glam VI Lipglass, a colour I had gotten a few times way back in high school and loved as an everyday and work shade.

20140303-220937.jpg

As some of you may be well aware, I am a bit of a lipgloss and lipstick addict. And you may also know that I have been a fan of Bomber Betty Cosmetics for nearly two years already (my how time flies!). I am a huge fan of Jessica’s Brow Wow as well as all of her lip products – especially her glosses! Every few months I find myself craving some new shades that she whips up. I restocked on My Favourite Me by my friend Cherry Dollface, as well as a nice pink shade called Southern Belle. They’re both fab and I can’t wait to wear them more!

Coming Soon! – I will be having a review and “show and tell” of the Revlon Legacy limited edition lipsticks that just were released. I lucked out and managed to nab “Icy Violet” (1946) and “Snow Peach” (1956). I will prepare a post just for all of you!

CONTEST SOON! – Who is interested in a $20 PayPal gift card?! Well, you’re in luck, because I will have a post soon with all the details to enter. Stay tuned, dolls! ๐Ÿ˜€

Wedding Planning

20140112-164603.jpg

Hi everyone!

So the wedding planning has been moving along rather rapidly – we are planning to get married on 15 February aboard the Skyline Princess yacht, with a reception to follow. The Skyline Princess was introduced to me through our officiant, Captain Arnold. He was/is a Coast Guard chaplain for 40 years, and seeing as how both Alex and I are prior service, I thought it would fit perfectly. The yacht does a cruise around the Manhattan skyline and points of interest such as the Statue of Liberty. Everything is taken care of, from the ceremony to the cake to the bouquet. How could you go wrong with that, when we only have about six weeks to prepare? I hope it really is as wonderful as it seems so far!

20140112-173038.jpg

20140112-173226.jpg

20140112-173247.jpg

It will be a very small list of guests, only 11 at most. We are planning to get married so soon because Alex is planning to reenlist, this time in the Army. It is way easier to be already married going in rather than getting married after signing a contract. Soooo…hence the sooner wedding.

Now – on to the fun parts!

20140112-180208.jpg

These will be the wedding colours, in a nutshell: deep red, ivory, and black. I feel like it is extremely classy but appropriate for the time, both if the day and of the year. Plus red is my favourite colour!

20140112-180347.jpg

This, for sure, will be along the lines of what I intend my hair to look like that day. I already a few ideas of how to get my hair to this level of amazing vintageness, but I shall not divulge!

20140112-180538.jpg

20140112-180605.jpg

One of these beauties will certainly be taking center stage in my hairdo! ๐Ÿ™‚

20140112-180741.jpg

How’s that for some gorge vintage bling?! But I fear it may look like a little over the top considering the hair comb I will be having behind my right ear. So I will have to figure something out ๐Ÿ˜›

20140112-195835.jpg

20140112-195903.jpg

The wedding program and favour ideas that I have that I may DIY. Hey, it’s not 150 programs and favours I have to make, so certainly doable!

20140112-200024.jpg

This is certainly a picture I want to take – so cute!

I just bought my dress, but I won’t post anything about it whatsoever – why spoil the surprise? Plus I don’t even want to give away any little bit about it if my fiancรฉ happens to pop in here ๐Ÿ˜›

My Love List

I always tend to go through periods of things that I am obsessed with on a rotation. I will be completely into something and want to be immersed in it for weeks at a time, usually. Of course, the vintage lifestyle is more than just a fleeting obsession for me, and it has become a part of who I am at my core. But there are elements of it that I may pick up for a while, and then move on. But it will always be there! Maybe I am a little weird, but I like it that way ๐Ÿ˜‰

Here’s what I am totally into at the moment:

Getting Myself Doris Mayday’s Haircut

Image

I am completely infatuated with her ‘do. I want it. I NEED it. I will have it. I know I need to get my hair trimmed at least, and I figure this is the perfect balance of length for it still looking feminine yet short enough to have the style hold and to have it be manageable. Getting her perfect style may require a bit more of an effort, but I think it is ultimately worth it. Vintage pinup perfection, my dear!

Breaking Badย on Netflix

Image

ย

I know, I know – it took me long enough to watch this show. It takes a lot for me to get into a new show (new to me, mind you). The last show I got into was Freakshow; before that was Mad Men, if that gives you any idea. But I have been wanting to watch Breaking Bad for the longest time since I heard such good things about it, and I tend to go for gritty and deep shows. Well, I was right! Immediately from the first episode I was drawn in. The new season starts this weekend, and even though I am not through all of the prior seasons on Netflix, I certainly will be tuning in this Sunday!

ย

Double Indemnityย (1944)

Image

ย

I loved this movie to begin with when I saw it late last year, but over the past week or so I have really gained an even deeper appreciation for this film. Barbara Stanwyck was genius and gave an amazing performance. This is a totally typical film noir, and was one of the very first in the genre. This type did not start getting popular until after the war; this was released during a time when very upbeat and chipper movies were de rigeur for the time, in order to lift the moods of moviegoers during a time deep in war.ย Double Indemnity broke that mold and offered patrons a taste of something different, which took movie making in a whole different direction.

L.A. Noire video game

Image

ย

I never EVER thought I would want a video game in my life. I’m not going to dive into why, but let’s just say I’ve had more than my full share against my will. But after being introduced to this amazing game, where you interrogate suspects and victims based in 1946 Los Angeles, I am all in. I am going to be grabbing myself an Xbox along with this game next week after I get paid, because I need this awesomeness in my life. You get to read people’s body language and how they act around you and respond to your questions, and guess whether they are lying, telling the truth, or you have doubt as to their answer but have no proof to shoot back in their face. You work at solving cases, all while seeing the amazing scene of post-war LA and the drool-worthy cars and clothing. And this game is actually rather accurate to the time period in regards to everything. I can’t wait to get my paws on it!
