A Family Wedding

About two weeks ago, my husband and I went to his cousin’s wedding, and the reception was held at a gorgeous country club on Long Island. I wanted to look the part, so I found my dress first, and then built my outfit around that.

My dress is the Gia dress from Pin Up Girl Clothing. It’s such a decadent and sexy dress, I had to have it! With a 1930s look, I decided to build my whole look around it. I wanted to go for a 1930s Art Deco vamp. It has a good amount of stretch but also is sturdy enough to hold and shape everything. I felt like a goddess for sure!

My clutch and earrings are gloriously glamorous – both from Pink Collar Life’s shop. Full disclosure though: if you visit their shop, you will want to buy everything they have! I have purchased about five separate occasions, and I have everything from clutches, hair barrettes, combs, headbands, jewelry, turbans and much more from them. All of their products are high quality and fabulous! For the wedding, I bought their Stardust clutch and Art Deco Fan earrings, shown below.

Aren’t they stunning?! I received so many compliments on them that I honestly couldn’t keep track. They will be coming to Viva with me in a few weeks as well!

What makeup did I wear, you say? Well, I wore Velour Lashes mink falsies in Winging It, shown below. I wore several ColourPop shadows, and I used the Kat Von D Shade + Light contour kit as well as NARS blush in Orgasm. My brows are using Brow Definer in Dark Brown from Anastasia of Beverly Hills. My lippie is OCC Lip Tar in Black Dahlia.

I loved my look for the night! I achieved curl in my hair via a wet set using Rockin’ Rollers (the same exact thing using a different name can be found in CVS) and Lottabody. I did not get to brush out as much as I wanted because after just having major wrist surgery, my wrist was not up to the task!

During the reception, a photographer was on standby taking pictures of guests and putting them into frames. Of course I dragged my husband to take a snap, and well…

Major Makeup Haul!

image1

Hi dolls! Today I just had to share about my huge makeup haul over the past week – I am just too excited, I can’t contain it anymore 😛 I’ve been to Sephora, MAC, bought makeup online, had a friend send me some makeup – and I can’t wait to try it all. I have been thinking about YouTube videos to show the makeup is, how I apply it, an tips and tricks – what do you all think? Let me know in the comments or by liking this post!

Let’s get started!

IMG_0057

This is a good chunk of my haul from Sephora and MAC. I had gone in looking for the new Too Faced Semi-Sweet Chocolate Bar (I have the original and LOVE it to death!), and I ended up walking out with $300 in damage. I bought the Kat Von D Ink! Liner, more of the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer, and more of the Urban Decay Primer Potion, which I swear by for an eyeshadow base. I also got a few more things, including an old favorite Armani Code perfume, which I have not had in years but love dearly – one of my favorite scents! I also went to MAC and got some more of my Studio Sculpt foundation, as well as a limited edition lip liner in this gorgeous rose color, as well as some $10 lipglass and white pigment. The Better Than Sex Mascara from Too Faced looks very promising, as I have been looking for a good mascara, and most just don’t cut it. I like to have LASHES, not just meh lashes. I love drama, but only in my lashes 😉 I tried the Benefit They’re Real Mascara, but it didn’t seem so great to me, despite people raving about it. I hope this Better Than Sex stuff satisfies me (see what I did there?).

IMG_0053

I absolutely adore Anastasia of Beverly Hills. I love everything they put out. If they make it, I will buy it. I have her contour palette and Dipbrow Pomade, and I am in love. So, it figures I would acquire more. I bought a different shade of the Dipbrow, since I’ve been thinking the Ebony may be a little too harsh for me, so I went with Ash Brown. I also bought her Brow Wiz in Dark Brown, and I intend to use the both to make a perfectly balanced and perfectly matching look. I want normal eyebrows, not Joan Crawford brows. AVOID! I also got the new (and glorious!) liquid lipsticks in Pure Hollywood and Sad Girl – I am currently waiting on Retro Coral to arrive 🙂 I have gotten more into darker colors and unique colors, so I had to get the Sad Girl, which is a gorgeous red-plum shade with shimmer! Shimmer is so hard to find in liquid lipsticks, and this one looks amazing.

IMG_0058

Up next are some little random lovelies I can’t wait to try. I have heard wonderful things about the Orgasm blush from Nars, so I had to go for it. I went with a cream blush, since I much prefer that over powder (way more natural). As much as I absolutely adore my Besame Crimson Cream Rouge, it’s all I have used for three years (and still on the same pan!) and I feel like branching out a bit. The Orgasm blush looks amazing on all skin types an offers the perfect red-pink color, so I went for it. I have also gotten super into MAC pigments, as well as more red and copper shades for my eyes, so I bought the Heritage Rouge and Copper pigments. For highlighting the inside of my eyes near my tear ducts, I bought the white pigment at MAC for $10, as it’s in a small size. But with these pigments, a little goes a LONG way! Definitely don’t treat them as normal shadows, or you will look like Tammy Faye Baker. Again, AVOID! And in my search for different lip colors, I found Lime Crime’s Chinchilla lipstick, which I picked up for $10 on a clearance from Pin Up Girl Clothing when I was finally able to pick up their black stretch capri pants when they returned back in stock (Whee!). This color is a grey lilac, which I love. I can’t wait to try it!

IMG_0051

Next up are some products from Le Keux cosmetics, along with an accompanying lip brush. A friend bought and sent me these straight from London, as I have always wanted to try them. Peachy Keen lip paint is a gorgeous peach shade that is perfect for day, and especially for the upcoming spring and summer months (hurry up!). Whistle Bait is a highly pigmented sexy red shade that is perfect for nights out, or when you just want some extra zazz in your look. Black Cadillac is a gel eyeliner that I have been wanting to try – I am just waiting on the damn liner brush to arrive! 😛 I love Le Keux’s brushes – double ended for awesome convenience!

Also, have you noticed my pictures have gone up in quality? Well, the husband treated me to a new Canon Rebel T5 camera! It takes amazing shots, ad I cannot wait to take more to share with you. I know the camera phone shots were just not cutting it and did not look professional, and I am wanting to really make this blog the best it can be – I decided to start with the pictures, thanks to my awesome hubby 🙂

What do you all think of my giant makeup haul? I can’t wait to try it all and work it into my everyday (and even not-so-everyday) looks! Would you like to see YouTube videos? Let me know below!

Recent Acquisitions

Over the past few weeks, this girl has been acquiring some new goodies! Sometimes to the husband’s dismay, but you know – for work, fall, posterity 😛

I wanted to share some of the greatness I have gotten, because I have just been too excited about everything.  I got some basic needs like a black pencil skirt and basic tops, but I wanted to share some of the stars I have acquired because the girl just can’t help it! 🙂

40s rust dress

1940s Rust Colour Lace Detail Dress

As soon as I saw this, I knew I had to have it.  Isn’t it just perfect for fall with that colouring? It is the most divine rust colour, with slightly lighter lace detail at the bust pockets.  Authentic vintage in my size for $45? Yes ma’am!

blouses

Vintage 1950s Dead Stock Blouses

When I saw these, I envisioned them with jeans, a nice circle skirt – anything!  I love the subtle-yet-intricate details that both blouses have, as well as the soft colours that know no bounds of season.  Perfect basics that aren’t-so-basic that can take me from work to anywhere else without too much effort.  And who doesn’t love that?

fall bracelet

Vintage 1940s Lucite Bracelet

I saw this and had to nab it.  The colours are utterly fall and will match with a lot of my wardrobe.  The rich yellow, orange, brown, and green complement each other so well and make me instantly think of fall when the leaves are at their most vibrant and spectacular colouring. And for $10, too 😉

kitsch kitten bookends

1950s Kitsch Kitten Bookends

Anyone who knows me knows I love some good midcentury kitsch – I’m already amassing quite a collection, and always itching for more!  As soon as I saw these cuties, I had to have them – and now I do!  They are lovingly hugging some vintage pulp fiction novels I have on my vintage shelf in our bedroom.  And they are just bloody adorable.  The one thing that wasn’t adorable?  The seller I received them from using the name on the return address portion as “Mr. Big”.  Ehhhh…

lux de ville blue

Lux de Ville Blue Anchor Bag

I could not resist the colour of this bag.  I absolutely adore Lux and all of Yvette’s designs – I have about 5 or 6 of their bags now, and I’m always lusting for more 🙂  Oh, and something else pretty cool?  I accidentally got my nails done the same colour as my bag last week:

bagnails

Tee hee hee 😛

Naturalizer heels

Naturalizer Vintage Inspired Pumps

I’ve been on a shoe binge lately, I will be the first to admit.  I feel like I am perpetually lacking in the show department, even in basics.  So, when I saw these beauties, I had to nab them.  They are a good brand, and the leather is as soft as a baby’s behind.  They are basic but yet not-so-basic – which is perfect and ever so versatile.

remix black

Black Remix Vintage Inspired Wedges

Anyone who is anyone in the vintage, pinup, or rockabilly scene knows of Remix.  I’ve lusted after them for quite a while now (along with Miss L Fire!), so when I found not one, but TWO pairs of Remix shoes for under $30 each (when they retail for well over $100 each), I was nearing peeing myself.  I had to, I just had to.  I got these little lovely black wedges along with this gorgeous chartreuse pair as well:

remix green

I love them!  Unfortunately, one of the back straps broke on the black pair, but I can reconfigure them to take out the back straps and just make them a slip-in sandal.  Problem solved! 🙂

sweater clip

1950s NOS Flamingo Sweater Clip

I have always wanted a sweater clip/holder, but have never really found one that “spoke” to me, so I never indulged.  I happened to randomly search for sweater clips on eBay, and I came across this beauty!  I love flamingos, they have such a broad appeal across the vintage and rockabilly scenes alike.  And this being NOS sealed the deal for me.  I love pre-loved vintage dresses, but for some reason little items like this I get excited about being new and I can’t believe how it made it this long without being loved by someone!  I had to give it a loving home…so I did 😀

TTL Dress

Vintage Reproduction 1950s Tie Shoulder Swing Dress

I bought this off of a Facebook group that specifically caters to vintage for ladies over a size US 14.  This was hand made by a member of the group who makes FABULOUS dresses by the name of Tatted Tina Lopez.  The quality of her work is simply amazing, I must say!  I instantly fell in love with this dress from the tie shoulder straps to the way the print just screams mid century modern – I had to have it in my life! Can you honestly blame me? 😉

What goodies have you recently purchased?  Anything you want to share?  Do you get as excited as I do, or am I alone here? 😛

“Summer” Reading

Since my husband is at the academy in the evenings, I find myself with a lot of personal time after work.  But I fret not, for I can read!  I have really become quite the book hoarder lately, and I seem to order more books even when I haven’t finished the initial ones I ordered yet.  But I have another 5 months of weekdays of solitude, so I can certainly make some headway into my accumulation of books, no? 😉

I have really found some gems that I am supremely excited about and/or have enjoyed very much.  Since you are here, I am assuming you are all as much of vintage lovers as I, and should therefore know of such pressing matters.  I’ve never really been a believer in “summer reads” or “winter novels” and what have you; I tend to just leap in to whatever strikes my fancy.  If I am on to something that I am interested in and/or am supremely enjoying, who is it to say that it is “out of season”? Not I!

And so, I present to you: “summer” reading 🙂

Cary

Cary Grant: A Biography – Marc Eliot

This is a very comprehensive biography on Cary.  I have always loved Mr. Grant, and I find that they just don’t make men as debonair, witty, and handsome as he was anymore (minus my husband, of course of course 😉 ).  I have always been interested in his life and what happened within that time, and I had actually been ruminating over buying this biography each and every time I had gone into a bookstore for the past six months.  During a Saturday out doing errands for my husband’s needs for the academy, I just had to stop at the Barnes & Noble along the way for fear that my air supply would be terminated.  I saw this book, and figured, “I need to – I have to!”  I am very excited to make my way through it and become an ever-so-learned person on the life and times of Mr. Cary Grant.

Icon: The Life, Times, and Films of Marilyn Monroe (Volume I: 1926-1956) – Gary Vitacco-Robles

Anyone who knows me knows I simply adore Marilyn Monroe.  I have a tattoo of her.  I have inhaled every biography I have ever known that was decent (qualifier!) that has ever come out.  I have over 5,000 pictures of her.  I can tell you an exact filmography of all her movies, the years they came out, her character in them, the general story line, and what she thought of said movie and what was going on in her life at the time.  So when I happened to stumble upon a new Marilyn biography that had recently come out this year, I needed it.  It comes in at 788 pages, and it is only volume one.  That excites me more than most human beings should be excited over a book.  I have a feeling that this biography is going to be the biography of Marilyn, usurping even Donald Spoto’s benchmark biography of her.  When volume two comes out later this summer, I do not care how much or how little of the book I have gotten through, I will be throwing my money at Amazon!

girls of ac

The Girls of Atomic City – Denise Kiernan

This is an enthralling and encompassing story of how one “town” (if you can call it that) was built purely for the purpose of ending the war.  How exactly, they did not know.  What they did know, however, was that what they were doing was making a very real difference.  They weren’t aware that they were aiding in making the atomic bomb that would end the war in Japan in August of 1945.  Most of this quickly-built town was occupied by women, many of whom were from any place but this small slice of Appalachia in Tennessee.  They were single and trying to better their lives or married and hoping whatever work they were doing was helping their man fighting for them overseas.  What I love about this book is how it is non-fiction, based on real events and actual history, but reads and plays out exactly like a fictional novel.  It is very interesting, highly entertaining, and certainly a crash course in history that we should all have!

the-garden-on-sunsetgarden-of-allah-trouble-with-scarlett-cover-9Citizen-Hollywood-Book-Cover-5

The Garden of Allah Series – Martin Turnbull

I absolutely adore these books.  I can’t even tell you.  I don’t even remember how I found these books on Amazon, but I am ever so grateful I did.  I am only just finishing the first book, but I already bought and received the other two in the series, already knowing I will probably love them just as much as the first (especially from what I see from the reviews, they only get better!).  This novel is historical fiction (which I have found to be my most beloved genre, right beside biography) and deals with the lives of three up-and-comers trying to make it in Hollywood starting in 1927.

The real Garden of Allah hotel

The real Garden of Allah hotel

Kathryn Massey, Gwendolyn Brick, and Marcus Adler have all made it to Los Angeles for various reasons, but the Garden of Allah brought them together as friends.  A famous and actual hotel owned by the actress Alla Nazimova, it was renowned for fabulous and crazy parties, and had famous stars visit and stay such as Tallulah Bankhead, Ramon Novarro, Ginger Rogers, Tyrone Power, Greta Garbo, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Maureen O’Hara, Errol Flynn – I could go on and on!  The interactions the characters have with the stars makes them seem human and real, rather than “above” anyone and untouchable.  I love the situations the characters get in, the stars they meet, the troubles they encounter, and what they do to get past them.  It’s a great read so far, and certainly a series I would recommend to any vintage lover out there…hell, I would recommend it to anyone!

What books do you recommend for “summer” reading?

I’m a Vintage Girl, in a Corporate World

20140510-104829.jpg

This week I started a new job as an executive assistant at a rather large and successful healthcare management company. I am one of two executive assistants for the president and vice president of the company. I am enjoying it so far, and I get along with my coworker swimmingly. I hope to keep it that way! 🙂

20140510-110019.jpg

Because of this new position, I have to dress much more conservatively than any other job I have held previously. This means covering up my tattoos on my chest and arms, wearing “appropriate” makeup, having proper hair (no hair flowers!), and nothing too crazy or flashy.

“But my style demands showing off my tattoos and being flashy! Whatever shall I do?” I asked myself. I really wasn’t sure what to do about my new and sudden requirement for a change in wardrobe. I understood it, and honestly with a coworker I actually like being around so far and makes work bearable I’m willing to deal with it. I also want to keep my vintage style, however. I still want to be the vintage/pinup girl in the office if I have to not be the rockabilly side of me, at least.

I checked my wardrobe – nothing seemed to fit the bill. Too low cut (I have to practically wear turtlenecks to cover my chest tattoos!), needs longer sleeves, the print is too crazy, the skirt is too short. Whatever was I to do?

GO SHOPPING!

Yes, that was it. I need to go shopping. I need to find elements of my style that fit in with my new need for a conservative corporate wardrobe. And if any of you know me, you know I turn to the interwebs first for shopping. I rarely shop for clothes “outside” anymore, as I can never seem to find my style or anything that’s my size if I do.

My first stop? ModCloth!

20140510-110836.jpg

On the very first page I saw this little number – the Coach Tour Dress! It has a high cowl neck collar so I can hide my tattoos, and despite it being sleeveless that can easily be remedied by wearing a cardi 🙂 And only $50? Yes, please!

20140510-111331.jpg

Next is the Greeting Postcard Dress for $95. I kept scrolling in dresses because that’s what I mostly intend to wear (a vintage girl’s staple ensemble!), and I thought this was beyond adorable. I know the neckline is a little low (yes my tattoos are that high), but I can easily remedy that with buying some Cami Secrets to attach underneath and voilà – good to go! I never thought I would ever need Cami Secrets in my life though! LOL.

20140510-112356.jpg

This California Sunset Dress hits all the right notes for me – nice bright print, cute collar, high neckline – and an affordable $90! And as you can tell, I think florals will be a big part of my attire 😉

20140510-112959.jpg

Yes. Yes yes yes yes. I will certainly be adding this Dance Floor Date Dress to my wardrobe! I love the 40s/50s flair of it and y’all know I love me some red. And only $60? You don’t have to ask me twice!

20140510-113739.jpg

This Beach Home Office Top had me at hello. It just screams 1950s, right? And that collar will cover up my chest tattoos perfectly 🙂 Only $45! Worth every penny!

20140510-114258.jpg

This Modern Madeline Top is just entirely too cute. I love the blue colour and it should cover my tattoos. $40, you say? Sure!

20140510-115000.jpg

This is the Partake in Peppermint Skirt for $70. I love the stripes, and I absolutely adore the now accent at the waist. Perfection!

20140510-115512.jpg

This Binnacle of Excellence Skirt has red and blue anchors on it! I need this! It’s entirely too perfect for me. There will be $60 gone from my paycheck for this.

Okay, I think ModCloth consumed too much of my time. But they seem to have such lovely work appropriate and vintage inspired pieces!

20140510-120322.jpg

The Erika Dress from Pinup Girl Clothing is necessary, I think. So cute and it should cover most everything if I wear the Cami Secret 🙂 $120.

20140510-120718.jpg

I absolutely adore the colouring of the Birdie Dress from PUG with its rich mustard and gorgeous purple pairing. And very affordable at $118!

20140510-121203.jpg

This Monique Dress for $92 is amazing. To me it keeps the style I love but looks completely professional at the same time. I would just need to throw a black cardigan over it to cover my arm tattoos and I would be ready to go!

20140510-121457.jpg

OMG this Summertime Polo Top is just so freaking cute – I need this in my life! I’m going to have to have PUG take my $72 ASAP. I can’t not have this and be okay with it.

20140510-121925.jpg

These 1940s Style Swing Trousers from Heyday are based on actual vintage patterns and come as close to the real thing as possible. They have so many colours, too! Of course I will need the basics like grey, black, et cetera – but you know I am getting them in red, pea green, blue, and more as well! Gotta still retain some personality at work, oui? 😉

I am just embracing the reason to shop and buy new clothes for the job. I figure it’s worth it if I have a decent work environment and I make good money to find my vintage tendencies and go on trips and get more tattoos and more and more!

Do any of you have conservative corporate jobs? How do you retain your style at work?

Vintage Family Photos

Recently I have gotten more into viewing old family photos from the 1920s through the 1960s since buying Charles Phoenix’s Americana the Beautiful (I highly recommend!). I recently did a web search lately to see what was out there, and boy oh boy – did I find some real gems!

Some are cute, others are fashionable, and some are just downright scary. But all have that great vintage flair!

20140428-181513.jpg

How cute is this family? So typically “perfect”. Except for the daughter maybe – she’s perhaps a little demonic looking. But still cute!

20140428-182229.jpg

I love the maternity wear from the midcentury. I know I would certainly have that be the majority of my wardrobe if and when I am pregnant! And the guy looks like such a badass rockabilly dude – just look at the tee with the rolled sleeves!

20140428-182321.jpg

I would like each one of those women’s dresses, kthxbye.

20140428-182359.jpg

I love how “every family” this is. This looks like it would be used as an advert for cereal or oatmeal of some sort. So cute!

20140428-182949.jpg

Is that kid a hybrid of an Elizabeth Taylor look-alike and a stormtrooper knockoff?

20140428-183120.jpg

This is such a sweet picture. You don’t really see too many like this anymore, do you? I love the happiness just radiating from their faces whilst they enjoy the event that they are attending. And I will take that dress as well. And that waist too while we’re at it.

20140428-183315.jpg

DAMN IT FEELS GOOD TO BE A GANGSTA.

20140428-183348.jpg

I apologize for the small size of this. I thought it was too cute/funny not to share. Cute because of the new parents beaming from ear to ear with their new bundle of joy; funny because that kid legit looks like he saw something completely horrifying.

20140428-183538.jpg

Cute photo of a family enjoying their new-fangled television set. I wonder if they had to get glasses from sitting that close all the time?

Oh and I’ll take that skirt too. Add it to my tab.

20140428-183740.jpg

This girl just oozes style in how she wears her essentially basic but well put together ensemble. And those gams!

20140428-185638.jpg

This photo is awesome. I want this framed. The kid is legit peeing, the father has his hand to his head in a “WTF” type manner, and the mother and other child are just like, “Who cares, we are taking this bloody picture!” So much win in one shot.

20140428-185822.jpg

This is quite the dapper group, huh? Why don’t people dress like this anymore?

20140428-185921.jpg

“Excuse me, I mustache you a question…”

I’m sorry. I had to.

20140428-190015.jpg

Just a typical day on Main Street. I’m sure this was a scene you would see played out most weekends in towns all across America.

20140428-190116.jpg

I loved this canned trailer! I wanted one for years now 🙂 This was taken in Iowa in 1958.

20140428-190205.jpg

This is another trailer shot from the 1940s. Imagine going camping and having a road trip in that?! I would love every single second of it 🙂

20140428-190306.jpg

Am I the only one who thinks this dude has an Errol Flynn vibe going on? Anyone else?

20140428-190402.jpg

Is this the same kid as before? What does he keep seeing that terrifies him? Does he see demons or something? Seriously, I want to know why these kids are freaked the hell out.

20140428-190749.jpg

This woman’s style is rad. This woman has to be from NJ, because that hair has such a huge pouf to it! And that skirt – I will take one of those. What’s my total? Charge it? 😉

The Wedding Celebration (Afterparty?)

This past Sunday we held a huge shindig at a great restaurant my husband’s brother works at called E.B. Elliot’s. It’s here on Long Island at the Nautical Mile, a great place near the water to go out and have a great time at.

Nearly all of Alex’s family and friends were there, as well as my sister, mom, and my bestest gal Jodie with her son RJ. Of course she gifted me some amazing shots to remember for the rest of our lives.

Here are a few that I wanted to share!

We had a fabulous time and we are so glad that everyone came. I feel really blessed to be a part of such a great and loving family. After the horrors my mom and I went through with my father’s family, I feel like I could not be part of a better family that is so welcoming and supportive. I can happily say that I look forward and certainly do not dread spending time with my in-laws 🙂

BIG NEWS! – Our wedding was featured in a New York Times article! We had our ceremony recorded and made into a little video that goes along with a blurb about us in the article. It is very surreal to see ourselves on a big name journalistic medium such as the Times – something to keep forever for sure!

Check it out by clicking here!
